Liquid Metal Logic for Soft Robotics

While there are many soft matter sensing and actuation technologies, is far less choice when it comes to material devices for control computation. One solution the Soft Matter Computer (SMC) which can perform both analogue digital computations in materials. This computer processes a fluidic input pattern consisting of alternating regions conducting insulating fluids into an electronic output signal. However, use salt water as conductive fluid means that has high electrical resistance requires AC voltage, making untethered operation impractical. In this letter, we introduce liquid metal (LM-SMC), uses galinstan alternative fluid. We show by switching metal-sodium hydroxide input, reduce SMC three orders magnitude, allowing at DC voltages 2 Volts under. characterise stability patterns demonstrate potential LM-SMC using bipolar ionic polymer composite shape memory alloy actuators. By enabling fully computation multiple actuators from single low voltage source, enables new class intelligent machines.

The use of few stiff fibers to control the deformation of dielectric elastomer actuators, in particular to break the symmetry of equi-biaxial lateral strain in the absence of prestretch, is demonstrated.
